Being a digital nomad is all about freedom, adventures and great Instagram posts! Right?

It might seem like it, but the reality hits you hard and soon you realize, that there is a side to being a world traveler and digital nomad, that not many talk about.

I, however, want to talk about it.

Because it’s important and will give you a better understanding of what all of this is actually about before we dive into details of building an online business while traveling.

Behind the beautiful Instagram photos

There is no doubt, that some of the Instagram accounts of digital nomads are absolutely amazing.

But there is a lot more going on behind the scenes. And these are the things you will have to face and deal with regularly if you decide to take this path. And it is also what so many of you might get wrong about being a digital nomad.

Being able to travel the world and work online takes a lot of effort. And in most cases, it comes with a lot of sacrifice.

Two of the most important things to talk about are doing proper work and the freedom to move around.

Work. Hard work, actually!

If you still think that traveling the world does not cost much, think again. Because it does!

And this means you have to have money. Hence, you have to put in the work to make the money you need.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Building a sustainable online business is not easy.

And it actually could take up to 12 hours a day of your time. Yes, even more than what you would do when working a regular job in an office.

In others words, being a digital nomad means working a lot in order to make the money you need to continue moving around and actually enjoying your free time.

What is more, there is a good chance that you are doing this work for yourself (which I think is the way to go), therefore it all depends on what you do!

And if you don’t, well, your travels will end pretty quickly.

No, you won’t make new friends!

It seems like traveling the world, exploring different places and meeting new people is the best possible way to make new friends.

I mean, wouldn’t it be beautiful, making friends from all over the world?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen that way.

I have had the lunch to meet new, truly interesting people while traveling and yes, I have mostly found a good connection with them. But after a day or two, when our ways go in different directions, our short friendship is over.

Traveling and exploring new places takes a lot of time. And so does your work!

So you are only left with so much time for your friends and family. Not to mention keeping up with new friends, you could make on your way.

Of course, no matter where I travel, I always keep in touch with my family, a couple of my closest friends. And I am more than happy with that. But at the same time, I have long forgotten about the idea of making new friends, from different countries that I visit.

Getting the documents you need

Of course, if you know how, you can visit every country in the world. There are many people who have done that.

But it’s way more difficult than you might think.

It all starts with obtaining a Visa to each country you plan to visit. In some cases, it is as easy as it gets. But then again, you might spend more than a month to obtain a Visa for some specific countries.

And because it is so time-consuming, it is also pretty expensive.

But for the most part, all of this will leave a huge impact on your will to travel further. Just because seeing and experiencing all of the problems, is a crazy hassle, that holds you back from actually going where you want, exactly when you want it.

Homesick and lonely

Yes, I know!

One of the reasons you are going somewhere in the first place is because you want to get away. Just be with yourself and do the things you want to do, without having to sacrifice your plans to do something your friends and family would like to do.

But after a while, when you are traveling away, there will come a time, where you’ll want to leave all of that behind and return home.

Even if you might think you are, not all of us are strong enough to fight thru this feeling.

Your experience

These and other factors will change depending on who you are as a person. There is no doubt about that.

So if you have anything to add here, let me know in the comments or via the contact form.

And before you go, be ready to work and sacrifice a day on the beach for your computer screen.
